  1. I just discovered that I need to install an app or have flash to do a direct speed test on my mobile. I don’t want to mess with those, so later I might just tether the netbook and use its browser to get a reading.

Anytime I get an H or H+, I can swap a Linux kernel or update the browser on the netbook PDQ. I’ll do it sometimes on a tether just to see if it will come in quickly, but usually I wait for wifi.

I pay for 2.5 gigs of data but have yet to use more than 1.2. It seems like wifi is always around. On Brian’s we just take the included baseline of 500 megs. He comes close but has yet to exceed. Bumping it up to 2.5 gigs is just an extra $10 on the family thang.

  2. Is your phone rooted? If so, you don’t really have to pay extra for hotspot data. WiFi Tether for Root users is a great app if set up correctly.

  3. Yes, rooted, and the Nexus don’t seem to report tethering as tethering anyway. T-Mobile doesn’t meter tethering separately as far as I know. It all just goes down as data. Sprint, OTOH, put a whopper monthly charge on the bill for hotspot and their devices would rat you out if you turned on hotspot/tether without paying the charge.

I was going to tether the netbook to the phone to do a speedtest because I didn’t want to install the speedtest app on the phone.

Maybe I’m not following you correctly.

  4. Maybe I’m not getting it. The Nexus 4 has tethering already by USB or wifi. Doesn’t matter if it’s rooted.

Do not all Android mobiles have that? Or do they report tethering and the app mentioned above avoids that?

I’ve not had experience with any devices other than the ones I’ve owned, so I don’t know what they do.

  5. Usually rooted users don’t like to be charged extra for tethering via WiFi hotspot, so they install that app to use their regular data plan.

  6. It sounds like something I could have used when I had a Nexus S on Sprint, but now it doesn’t matter. Back then I did not know how to root, nor install custom ROM’s. Sprint charged a lot for tethering.

  7. Yesterday I was at a mall in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Sprint kiosk was packed. I have no idea why. Lynchburg has high speed data for every carrier.
